Spirit Lake
Published in Digital by Hard Shell Word Factory ()
Average review score:

Could not put the book down.It has been a long time since I have read such an excellent fiction book. I pretty much read true stories or news related stories. This book is special and well worth reading. The author captivates your interest right away and keeps your interest to the very last page. Christine has a unique writing style, very descriptive but not overly wordy. You feel you are right at Spirit Lake along with the characters in the book. It was a real let down to finish the book. My hope is that Ms. DeSmet continues to writes such wonderful stories.

Splash! Poems of Our Watery World
Published in Hardcover by Arthur A. Levine (March, 2002)
Average review score:

Wonderful!I love this book! Constance Levy does it again with this delightful, refreshing and thought provoking collection of poems. Her skillful use of rhythm and rhyme, and her keen observations of nature earn her a place among the upper echelon of children's poets such as Emily Dickinson and Lilian Moore.
Thorougly enjoyable, and it's both fun and educational for my children.

Spring Stories from the Collection News from Lake Wobegon
Published in Audio Cassette by HighBridge Company (January, 1991)
Average review score:

Lake Wobegon springs wonderfullyClarence Bunsen has bad (i.e. extremely funny) day, involving static, cramped hand and fear of death, ending with his leaping from a tree to frighten some children and restoring his equilibrium. Only GK could combine all those elements in one of the seasonal CDs from LW. "Me and Choir" is also excellent.

State Parks on the Great Lakes: A Complete Outdoor Recreation Guide for Campers, Boaters, Anglers, Hikers and Beach Lovers
Published in Paperback by Glovebox Guidebooks of Amer (March, 1997)
Average review score:

Excellent survey of some excellent parksThis book is a must for any boater around the Great Lakes. Too often, national press focuses on the East and West coasts when searching for great places to feature. This book provides a introduction to the "3rd Coast".

The Steamer William A. Irvin: "The Queen of the Silver Stackers"
Published in Paperback by Avery Color Studios (July, 1995)
Average review score:

A fantastic history of a great boatThis was an excellent review of the history of a Great lakes freighter. It gave me a good idea of what it was like to work on a boat and some insight into the importance of these boats to the steel industry. The tour of the Irvin is really interesting but the book is much more so. I can't recommend it enough. The author has a great deal of knowledge about the subject and conveys it in an enjoyable read. I hope the author is able to write more books like this in the future because he has a great foundation to work from.

Stifled Laughter: One Woman's Story About Fighting Censorship
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (September, 1994)
Average review score:

A wonderful book about censorship and life in a small townStifled Laughter was Brilliant! The subject of Censorship was the theme interwoven with details of the authors personal life! A very frank funny book that leads you through the trials of fighting the narrow minded while trying to balance life and marriage with two small children. The threat of censorship to both our classic literature and the continued freedom to practice critical thinking make this a book everyone must read!

I would recommend this book for ESL students in the intermediate to high intermediate range.

Storm over Mono: The Mono Lake Battle and the California Water Future
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (May, 1996)
Average review score:

Brilliant Historical Research that Reads like FictionI guess I may be a little biased because I was one of the primary sources for the book, but with some very minor issues, it is the most accurate re-telling of a story that should have been turned into a film. If you want to read a GREAT legal story that is also a true story, this is an excellent read. Oh yeah, it also has the obligatory beautiful photographs of Mono lake. Seems that lake doesn't know how to take a bad photograph! :-)

Streamside Trails; Day Hiking Central Arizona's Lakes, Rivers, and Creeks
Published in Paperback by Pinyon Publishing (01 June, 1994)
Average review score:

Beat the Arizona heat!50 trails are covered in this book. Twelve are under a mile, which is nice for beginners. Each entry includes a superb historical review and a short trail description. Trails are grouped into ten areas from Globe to Sedona. Each area contains an overview map. Then each trail includes a map too. Pages in the front of book categorize trails from easiest to most challenging. My favorite is the section that list trails by waterfalls and swimming holes. Directions to each trail are accurate down to the tenth of a mile. All the trails listed are within a few hours drive from Phoenix. A great book for under ten bucks.
